Laurence Belbin
A painter of light and atmosphere

Information

Painting on a beach that is full of colour and activity is an uplifting experience. The fun and laughter of people splashing in and out of the sea with sparkling light all around is irresistible to me.

When I am stood on a cliff top looking out over the vastness of the sea, with sunlight glittering off that ever-moving surface, I feel a sense of wonder and an overwhelming desire to paint and to try to convey those feelings to others through my work.

I am lucky to live in Dorset, a beautiful part of England. Early morning and evening light on this soft landscape has a tranquil feeling about it. Even in winter it is a joy to paint.

The interiors that I paint are the small glimpses one finds through an open door or a window sill with a view beyond, but the allure of a large room with the sunlight reflecting off of fine furniture is too strong to ignore. I like the idea of bringing the sunlight into the room by using items such as a vase of flowers, bottles and other odds and ends one collects and placing them on reflective surfaces.

Painting Venice is as enjoyable as my other work. The life and activity on the Grand Canal, the quieter, private aspect of the side canals all bathed in an envelope of soft sunlight makes Venice something very special.
